Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Las Vegas NV
945 PM PDT Thu Apr 24 2025
.SYNOPSIS...Pleasant conditions will continue through this evening
with mainly clear skies and slightly above normal temperatures.
Gusty southwesterly winds will increase across the region tomorrow
as an area of low pressure approaches the west coast. This system
will then move across the Desert Southwest this weekend, bringing
below normal temperatures, gusty winds, and the chance of a few
isolated showers. Temperatures will return to above normal levels
next week.
&&
.UPDATE...Deep trough oriented north to south off the West Coast has
overspread considerable high clouds across the region this
afternoon. This cloud cover will hang around overnight before
lifting north during the morning tomorrow. As the trough approaches
tomorrow, increased south-southwesterly surface winds are expected,
especially across Inyo County and the Western Mojave Desert.
Overall, these trends are well reflected in the current forecast and
no update is necessary.

.DISCUSSION.
A shortwave moving across the Great Basin this afternoon is
spreading high clouds over the northern half of the CWA. This
system has also resulted in breezy conditions developing across
southern Nevada, northwest Arizona, and the Colorado River Valley.
Peak wind gusts of 20 to 30 mph will continue into the evening,
but should decrease after sunset. On Friday, a large and fairly
deep trough will approach the West Coast, spreading high clouds
and gusty southwest winds across the region. HREF probabilities
for wind gusts over 40 mph across the western Mojave Desert and
Death Valley area have increased to greater than 70 percent for
tomorrow. As a result, a Wind Advisory has been issued for these
areas. While winds will decrease tomorrow night, they are expected
to increase again on Saturday, so I elected to keep the advisory
going through Saturday evening. The Morongo Basin is not included
at this time, but winds to 35 mph are possible in and near Morongo
Valley tomorrow and again on Saturday. If future guidance runs
show an increase in this area, the advisory may need to be
extended farther south.
As the trough pushes inland over the weekend, sharply cooler
temperatures will follow, with high temperatures falling 5 to 10
degrees below normal. Precipitation chances will remain favored
across the Sierra and southern Great Basin, but with 500mb temps
falling to -25C or colder north of I-40, we can`t completely rule
out some stray terrain-driven showers developing even further
south. Guidance has come into better agreement on a slower
eastward ejection of the trough from the area, keeping
temperatures slightly below normal into Monday. Thereafter, high-
pressure ridging will gradually build across the region with
temperatures returning to above normal levels by midweek and
beyond.

.AVIATION...For Harry Reid...For the 06Z Forecast Package...
Southwest winds of 7-10 kts are expected through much of the
overnight period, but there will be periods where the winds drop
below 5 kts. After 17z expect southwest winds to increase once again
with speeds 10-14 kts along with gusts 20-25 kts with occasional
gusts to around 30 kts, especially after 22z. Winds will begin to
diminish Friday evening. Expect BKN high clouds around 25k feet
through 12z Friday before those begin to move out and skies clear.
For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...For the 06Z Forecast Package...Winds for most areas
will drop below 10 kts through the overnight period. The exception
will be KDAG where westerly winds 20-30 kts will remain overnight.
South to southwest winds will increase over most areas after 16z
with speeds around 10-15 kts and gusts to around 20-30 kts. Winds at
KDAG will see westerly winds gusting to 30-35 kts in the afternoon
while KEED and KIFP will see afternoon and evening south gusts 30-35
kts. Expect BKN high clouds around 25k feet through 12z Friday
before those begin to move out and skies clear. Some clouds around
10-12k feet around KBIH overnight.
